Home is where the heart is.

Your home can be a house, apartment, room you rent, a tiny house, couch surfing across the world, exploring van life, or even a tent. Not everybody has the luxury of having a home and if you do you are very blessed.

However, in this article, I want to make it very clear that even if you don’t have a home you can still create a healing and sacred space. The real home is inside of you, you are home.

A healing and sacred space can be done in many ways based on your living situation and how you live your life. However, this article is going to focus on the idea that you have your own space even if it is tiny and you are there just temporarily.

Creating a sense of safety

The biggest part of healing is to create a sense of safety. If we are in survival mode it makes it very difficult to heal because the autonomic nervous system is in overdrive which doesn’t give our body downtime for healing.

Think about if you’ve never turned off a car engine and let it run and run and run and then from time to time rev the engine over and over again but you never turn it off. If you don’t have a sense of safety, then in time you’re going to wear down, overheat and slowly destroy yourself.

I know for some people it’s hard to find a sense of safety.

I know safety is not afforded to everyone.

Safety should be a right, not a privilege, however, that is not how it currently works in society. Especially during Covid when people are locked in with people that they might not necessarily be locked in with if Covid did not happen. There are complicated relationships.

There are also complications with what safety means for ourselves as well as understanding the concept of safety personally. Some people don’t even know what safety means for them because they’ve never been safe.

In the early part of my life, I never thought of my home as a healing or sacred place because it was unsafe and if you asked me what was safe I would not have been able to tell you. So, if you have been there yourself or you are there now – I want to help you find a safe, healing, and sacred space for only you.

Yes, you only. I will talk more about that later.

Create a sacred healing space.

Creating a Sacred Space is a ritual. So the goal of this article is to help you create a sacred and healing space they also feel safe. A place where you can turn off your engine, take a deep breath, and allow your body to heal.

Below I’m going to give you a few examples of how you can help create a sacred and healing space for yourself.

One of the first things that you will need to do to create a sacred and healing space is dedicate whatever space you’re going to create to you and only you.

I know for some people that seems perhaps selfish or exclusive, but we all need those types of places. Think of moms, the only alone time they often get is hiding in the bathroom or sneaking into the pantry to eat some cookies while laying on the floor in the dark hoping that nobody will find them.

And sure, you take what you can get – however, you can also find ways to get what you need.

Small bits of time are good enough…

Next, you don’t need to spend hours in your sacred and healing space, but you can. However, 5-15 minutes can be enough to turn that engine off and cool it down significantly. So, there is no excuse to not make time for you even if it is a small window of time.

As you continue to take the time consecutively, your body starts to recognize that you will have these downtimes, and each time you do it your body will heal more and more because it will recognize that it’s not happenstance.

Next, figure out where you want that space to be. Is it someplace outside, is it in a room of your house, is it a place on the floor in the corner of a room you rent, is it on the floor of your tent, is it in your lap wherever you’re sitting because you travel the world and don’t have a stationary place?

And take some time and ask yourself where would that place be. And once you know where that place is, it’s time to move into things we can do to make that place supportive, healing and nurturing.

Finally, surround yourself with meaningful things. Here are a few examples:

  • Music, Meditation Music or Nature Sounds
  • Nature (Plants, Twigs, Sage, Flowers, Etc.)
  • Pictures of Loved Ones
  • Religious Symbols or Objects
  • Sacred Items
  • Books or Journals
  • Candles (Real or Electric)
  • Incense or Essential Oils

Having a healing and sacred space can help: anxiety, depression, mood disorders, CPSD/PTSD, blood pressure, heal infections or injuries, reduce medication, sleep, stress, improve wellbeing and so much more.

It is our hope that you will be able to create a healing and scared space just for you.
